Biography:
Christi
Burgos
Papier-mâché & Jewelry Artist
Inspired
by her Mayan ancestry, papier-mache & jewelry artist Christi Burgos
has always believed in the idea of using “art as a revolutionary
tool,” by creating art that carries messages of culture, politics,
women and spirituality. Although her Mayan heritage inspires her most
she also applies ideas from all indigenous cultures into her creations.
What makes her papier-mâché artwork unique is that she
also incorporates a fusion from her Los Angeles urban experiences through
the eyes of a Chicana of Mayan lineage from “Highland Park.”
The
art of papier-mâché sculptures and 3D paintings has been
her form of expression for over 10 years. Her exposure to papier-mâché
began in 1996 when Virginia Ashby Valdez conducted a mask-making class
for Day of the Dead at Self-Help Graphics and Art. Christi has not been
able to stop creating folk art ever since. She has taught art workshops
for various organizations. She is a recipient of the LA Treasure Award
for her “folk art” awarded by the LA. Cultural Affairs Dept./CTMS.
She began making jewelry when she created one-of-kind clay pendants
and it has evolved from there.
Christi believes in giving back to the community and volunteers her
time through art and education. She has started her own art & jewelry
business appropriately named: Mayan Inspirations. Among the owners
and/or collectors of Christi’s work are: Artists Emilia García
& José Ramírez, Authors Miguel Ruíz & Kristy
Orona, LA Arts Commissioner Richard Montoya of Culture Clash as well
as filmmakers, Jesús Treviño and David Valdez.
